Want To Build A Fire That Will Last Throughout The Night? Here’s How You Do It

Most owners of wood burning fireplaces often think that waking up to a burnt-out fire is just one of the realities of owning this type of fireplace. Luckily that can’t be further from the truth – it is actually very easy to set up your fire to burn throughout the night, and in this post, we’ll show you exactly how to do it.

The process

Getting a continuous fire going in your wood burning fireplace is a relatively simple procedure. You can either start your fire up normally before heading to bed, or you can refuel you fire if it is already going.

  • About an hour before you’ll head off to bed, add a few logs to refill the firebox. After 20 minutes, add two more smaller logs if your fire has been burning well.
  • At this point you can open the primary air control to help build the fire back up. Once your fire is going well, you can turn your primary air control all the way down to allow your fire to burn long and low throughout the night.
  • If you don’t have wood storage near your unit, bring in a selection of small, medium and larger logs, so that they’ll be ready for the fire come morning.
  • The next day, you should see some coals in the fireplace. This doesn’t mean that the fire is out, just open your vent fully, and wait for the charcoal pieces to burn red. With that done, start adding the smaller pieces of kindling and wood you brought in the night before. Once they catch fire, you should add larger pieces until you have a fire that’s burning well again.
  • Keep your vent open until the fire is burning at an acceptable rate, after which you can close it to the setting you want. If you want to have a fire that will burn for longer, the vent shouldn’t be open full blast. You can also use the ACC feature to control the air, by pushing the lever fully back, and you will feel resistance as the timer is activated.

Remember to clean

You should keep in mind that keeping your fire going for extended periods of time might lead to a build-up of creosote and ash, which will impact on how well your fireplace will function in future. So be sure to clean it out every once in a while, making sure not to use chemical cleaners to clean creosote if you have a glass viewing pane in your fireplace – a damp cloth should work just fine.
